HEMA SYNTHETIC SWORDS

HEMA synthetic simulator swords.

What is a synthetic sword?

A synthetic sword, also known as a simulator, is a replica of a historical weapon made from a technical material such as polypropylene or nylon. Unlike wooden or steel versions, the plastic blade is designed to faithfully reproduce the shape and behaviour of a real weapon, whilst offering a level of safety suitable for training. The term ‘simulator’ is, in fact, commonly used as a synonym within the European Historical Martial Arts (HEMA) community.

The synthetic simulators available in our category

Our selection covers a wide range of disciplines and historical periods. You will find the long sword for German fencing, the Messer, the Federschwert, as well as the cutlass (Cutlass). The guard and pommel of each model are designed to closely match the proportions of the original weapons.

The range also extends to shorter weapons: daggers, combat knives, and shield-and-sword combinations for practitioners of Viking fencing. A diversity that reflects the richness of the medieval European martial tradition.

Why choose a synthetic sword for HEMA?

The main advantage of these replicas lies in their affordability. The cost is significantly lower than that of a steel sword, making them ideal for beginners or for increasing the frequency of training sessions. The high-quality synthetic blade replicates the overall balance of a steel weapon, with a balance point close to that of real models. The well-proportioned guard and pommel allow for genuine technical combat work. For experienced practitioners, it is also a valuable tool. Practising certain combinations or attacks with a synthetic long sword prevents premature wear and tear on steel equipment, whilst maintaining a regular and safe training routine.

Who are synthetic swords designed for?

These simulators are suitable for both beginners discovering HMA and intermediate practitioners looking to improve. Group lessons, club training, solo practice or introductory courses: the simulator adapts to all contexts. Some lighter models, with a smaller pommel, also allow younger practitioners to be introduced to the fundamentals of historical fencing or other short weapons of the European tradition, such as the sabre or secondary blades.

Safety and recommended protective equipment

A plastic weapon is still a weapon. Even fitted with a foam tip, it can cause injury without suitable protection. Wearing padded gloves, a 350N fencing mask and body protection is essential.

The reinforced guard on some simulators protects the hands, but does not replace approved equipment. Foam tips reduce the impact; they do not eliminate it. Responsible practice begins with a full set of equipment, whatever your level.

How to choose your synthetic sword?

The choice depends primarily on the discipline practised. For German fencing, a long épée with a rigid blade and neutral balance is preferred. For other disciplines, a shorter weapon or the use of a shield will lead to specific models.

Body type and skill level are also important factors: the blade length, the stiffness of the plastic, the weight of the pommel and the size of the guard must suit the fencer’s build and requirements. A well-chosen simulator is a tool that effectively supports your progress.
