FENCING CHEST PROTECTORS

What is a fencing breastplate?

The protective bustier is an essential safety item in fencing. Classic, traditional fencing, or for HEMA, combat eskrima, cane fighting, Tolpar-style knife fighting. Worn under the jacket, this rigid or semi-rigid device provides optimal protection for the chest, sternum and vital organs during fencing.Fencing federations require this equipment to be worn, regardless of your level. This regulation aims to ensure the safety of all practitioners of this demanding sport. Manufacturers now offer models adapted to all body types, ensuring maximum comfort for every fencer.

Different types of fencing chest protectors

The range of chest and bust protection available meets a variety of needs. Lightweight foam models, often certified to 350N, are ideal for training and beginners looking for a comfortable fit.For competition, reinforced bustiers offer superior resistance. The 800N is the standard for regular fencers, while the 1600N models are designed for high-level competitors and HEMA practitioners.Bustiers specifically designed for women feature an adapted anatomical design, unlike unisex breastplates for men. Materials vary between rigid plastic and foam padding, depending on the level of protection required.

Who are fencing breastplates designed for?

Each discipline has its own specific requirements. Foil fencers often prefer breastplates that allow for greater mobility, while sabre practitioners look for models that effectively cover the upper body. Epee fencing also requires special attention to the chest area. The choice depends largely on your profile. Beginners in clubs tend to opt for versatile models, while experienced competitors select their equipment according to the weapons they use. The specific techniques of each discipline directly influence the type of chest protector recommended, whether you are a man or a woman.

How to choose your fencing breastplate?

Size is the first selection criterion. Your breastplate must fit perfectly with your fencing jacket and not hinder your movements. An adjustable system at the back and sleeves makes it easier to adjust.Check compatibility with your mask and your entire outfit. Requirements differ between club training and official competitions. A 350N model is generally sufficient for beginners, while 800N certification is required for sabre, foil or épée competitions.Freedom of movement remains paramount. Try out different models to find the one that suits your range of motion. Systems with adjustable sleeves offer optimal adaptation to your body type.

Maintenance and durability of your breastplate

Regular maintenance significantly extends the life of your equipment. Always air out your breastplate after each session, as well as your jacket and mask. This prevents moisture build-up and preserves the materials.

Periodically inspect the condition of the areas subject to stress: the back, sleeves and attachment points. Plastic models need to be checked for cracks, while foam versions must retain their density. For 800N-certified bustiers used in competition, check the integrity of the protection before each use.

Store your outfit in a dry, well-ventilated place. Replace your equipment as soon as you notice significant wear and tear, especially if you practise intensively in a club or during technical training courses. Safety always takes precedence over durability.
