TRAINING FOLDING KNIVES(1)

What is a training folding knife?

A training folding knife is a simulation tool designed to faithfully replicate the characteristics of a real folding knife: dimensions, weight, balance and how it opens. Its blade is completely harmless — no cutting edge, no risk of cuts — making it an ideal accessory for martial arts training and self-defence.

These knives are made from materials selected for their durability: dense rubber, rigid plastic, anodised aluminium, as well as stainless steel, carbon steel or G10 for the most realistic versions. The handle may be made of wood or synthetic materials, depending on the model. The build quality is designed to withstand intensive use during training.

Why train with a dummy folding knife?

The educational value is clear: a training knife allows you to simulate realistic situations involving an armed threat, without exposing the practitioner or their partner to any real danger. The simulated blade allows for close-contact training that would never be possible with a real knife.Safety is not the only advantage. Training with a training pocket knife tangibly improves distance management, evasion and disarmament techniques. These concepts — fundamental to any tactical approach — require regular practice with a tool whose blade replicates real-world behaviour.

These accessories are used by practitioners of all levels: beginners in self-defence, Krav Maga experts, specialists in Filipino or Japanese martial arts, and instructors of military systems. The quality of the equipment directly influences progress.

The different types of folding training knives. There are two main categories within this range.

The Emerson-style folding knife is designed to simulate a quick draw from a pocket. Fitted with a belt or pocket clip, it replicates the opening of a real pocket knife in a real-life situation. Some models incorporate a locking mechanism to secure the blade in the open position, similar to a Laguiole or a double-locking folding knife. The clip allows for discreet carrying and immediate access.

The training butterfly knife — or training balisong — serves a different purpose. The butterfly knife is used to master the acrobatic manoeuvres and opening techniques specific to this type of knife. The blade of a butterfly knife is usually double-edged but blunt, to allow for safe rotation. A high-quality training butterfly knife faithfully replicates the balance of the real thing.

How to choose a training folding knife?

The choice of a training folding knife depends first and foremost on the discipline practised. For disarmament or self-defence training, a compact folding knife with a clip and locking mechanism is recommended. For balisong manoeuvres, opt for a training butterfly knife whose weight and dimensions match those of the real thing.

The quality of the materials remains a key factor: a blade that is too flexible or a poorly fitted handle will distort the feel. Also check the sturdiness of the hinge and how easily it opens. A carrying case is a bonus for practitioners who travel regularly. The training pocket knife must fit in your pocket without risk of damage.

Use and safety precautions

Even without a sharp blade, a training folding knife made of steel or a rigid material can cause bruises during sparring. Safety remains an absolute priority: wear suitable protective equipment and always practise under the supervision of a qualified instructor. For butterfly knife models, the risks associated with rapid rotations are very real for beginners. Store your knife in a dedicated sheath after each session, and avoid carrying it outside its usual clip without protection. These tools are intended solely for sporting and educational use — the quality of the training environment is just as crucial to your progress as the equipment itself.
