HEMA GORGET CLAVICLES

When the neck and collarbones are no longer a vulnerable area

In HEMA, every exchange involves parts of the body that standard equipment does not always provide sufficient protection for. The neck, throat and collarbones… these are frequent targets during combat, yet are often underestimated when putting together one’s combat outfit. The HEMA CLAVICULES neck guard has been specifically designed to address this shortcoming.

Whether fighting with a sword, during intense sparring or in close-quarters exchanges, blows to the upper torso can take even the most seasoned combatants by surprise. A gorget tailored to the realities of European Historical Martial Arts is a real game-changer — and BLAKLIST has recognised this by pairing its gloves, masks and jackets with protection designed for the most exposed areas.

A gorget that goes beyond simple throat protection

The CLAVICULES GORGET is not a conventional throat guard. It incorporates foam padding that extends over the collarbones, where impacts from a blade or a stick strike can cause pain without warning. The throat itself is protected by a reinforced panel featuring a plastic plate that absorbs direct impacts.

What this means in practice:

  • The collarbones are protected by foam padding that runs the entire length of their axis
  • The throat is protected by a rigid plastic plate integrated into the neck guard
  • The upper body gains greater coverage without requiring a radical change to how gloves or the mask are worn
  • The jacket remains compatible with wearing the gorgerin in the vast majority of set-ups

Why the collarbones and neck deserve special attention

In long-sword combat, downward strikes very often strike the shoulder and collarbone area before even reaching the mask. These impacts, even with a flexible blade, can cause sharp pain or even injury, particularly during a prolonged session or an internal tournament.

The foam integrated into the collarbone area cushions broad impacts. The hard plastic plate at the neck, meanwhile, withstands more direct impacts. The two materials play complementary roles: one absorbs, the other blocks. A rigid approach to the most exposed areas, yet flexible where mobility must remain intact.

CLAVICLE PROTECTOR or Kevlar: which to choose?

BLAKLIST offers several models to cater for different needs depending on the type of combat practised. The CLAVICLE PROTECTOR and the Kevlar version are not quite suited to the same situations — and understanding the difference helps you make the right choice.

🛡️ CLAVICLE PROTECTOR — For broad-area impacts and strikes to the upper torso

⚔️ Foam reinforcements on the collarbones to absorb blows during combat

🔒 Hard plastic plate to protect the neck from direct impacts

🥊 Ideal for practitioners who frequently take hits to the gloves, shoulder or collarbone

🗡️ Well-suited to the long sword and close-quarters exchanges with the demi-épée

🛡️ Made from BLAKLIST Kevlar — For cut resistance

⚔️ Cut-resistant fabric to minimise risks associated with bladed weapons

🗡️ Suitable for disciplines where the rapier or other cutting weapons are used

🥋 Priority given to protection against blades rather than full-body impacts

These two models complement each other in the BLAKLIST range. The choice depends on your discipline, your level of commitment in combat and the type of weapons you face.

What this gorgerin really changes during a bout

In HEMA, protection isn’t just about reducing pain. It frees the mind. When the throat and collarbones are properly protected, you stop holding back your movements for fear of a misplaced hit — and you can refocus on your technique.

Some practical benefits in everyday use:

  • Less hesitation when executing aggressive passes with a sword or other contact weapons
  • Preserved mobility thanks to a design that does not unnecessarily stiffen the upper body
  • Greater confidence in situations where the throat is exposed
  • Consistent protection from the gloves up to the shoulders thanks to the upper torso coverage
  • Reduction in painful impacts on the collarbones during intensive combat fencing sessions

How to incorporate this gorget into your outfit

The CLAVICULES gorget fits naturally into a complete HEMA practitioner’s outfit. It is worn between the mask and the jacket, in contact with the neck and collarbones, and can be layered over a breastplate if you use one.
