CANES AND FIGHTING STICKS(1)

FIGHTING STICKS AND CANES
Fighting sticks and other fighting sticks are their place alongside us.

Canes are extremely effective tools, if you know how to use them. Combat canes, rods and other fighting sticks have their place alongside us. Canes are extremely effective tools,
if you know how to use them. Walking, self-defence, fighting... You'll find canes and cane-like implements in many martial arts/personal defence systems.
The defensive cane was used as a walking tool or as a status symbol. or as a status symbol. However, over time, and to adapt to periods such as the 19th century or the present day, the cane has evolved to become a genuine instrument of personal defence. Defence techniques using the cane take advantage of its length and strength to keep an attacker at a distance. To this end, specific movements have been developed to disarm or immobilise an assailant.
The cane can also be used to parry blows, just like the self-defence umbrella, offering a strategic advantage in a confrontational situation. Finally, modern self-defence canes and rods are often made from lightweight, robust materials (polypropylene), making them more durable and easier to handle. This means that everyone has access to a high-performance tool, capable of meeting the demands of contemporary self-defence.
Note the arrival of walking sticks dedicated to combat, such as the Cold Steel Shillelagh, which allows us to present, in addition to protection, Bataireacht's own combat training weapon. Canes, sticks, rods... for your self-defense, the fight, the walk...

What is a combat cane?

Combat canes have their place in our urban world, and in the countryside too, of course, when we think of the makhila, for example. The combat cane serves a dual purpose: as an everyday walking aid and as a means of personal protection. This French sporting discipline has its origins in savate and French boxing, where the stick becomes a natural extension of the body. These canes stand out for their discretion and legality compared to other defensive weapons. Made from various materials such as rattan, chestnut wood or metal, they are effective tools for those who master the appropriate techniques.

The combat cane also belongs to the world of fencing, sharing with this discipline the importance of precision and timing. Modern sport has codified its use, transforming a simple stick into a regulated weapon for martial practice.

The different types of combat canes available

Traditional wooden canes include models made from rattan and chestnut, fine materials prized for their robustness. The Irish blackthorn, or shillelagh, embodies the ancestral art of Bataireacht.Modern tactical canes offer a contemporary take on this weapon, whilst African walking sticks bring a unique cultural dimension. Telescopic models prioritise portability.Specific designs such as skull-shaped pommels, pistol grips or city sticks combine aesthetics and functionality. Each type of stick has its own characteristics in terms of handling, balance and effectiveness for sport or self-defence.

The use of the stick in martial arts and self-defence

The combat stick plays a central role in several martial disciplines. Irish Bataireacht, French techniques and other international systems have developed specific methods of stick handling. The French Savate Boxing Federation oversees the sport and organises competitions where fighters compete according to precise rules. The bouts take place with controlled strikes, reminiscent of traditional fencing. In clubs, classes teach basic strikes and parrying movements. This discipline is an integral part of French combat sports. The cane’s effectiveness as a defensive tool rests on several strengths: the reach it provides against an opponent, the striking power it generates, and the control techniques it enables. In competition, fencers must master a variety of strikes to score valid hits. Clubs offer progressive training, from beginners’ sessions to advanced sparring. Regular practice develops coordination and reflexes, transforming the cane into a natural extension of the body.

Learning the techniques requires patience and perseverance. This discipline demands serious training to fully exploit the potential of this ancient weapon that has become a modern sport.

How to choose your combat cane?

The choice of a combat cane depends on several key criteria. Weight and balance directly influence handling and fatigue during prolonged sessions. The length must suit your build to optimise the effectiveness of the techniques. The type of handle – curved, straight, pistol-grip or decorative – affects comfort and grip. The strength of the material determines durability depending on the intended use. A stick intended for club training requires resistance to repeated impacts, whilst a cane for daily walking favours a balance between lightness and robustness. We offer ‘stylish’ canes such as the City Stick, Pistol Stick, 1911 or the very Gothic ‘Fin de Siècle’ skull-headed cane!

For competitive sport, certain models meet specific standards. Personal defence, meanwhile, requires a reliable and discreet cane for everyday use.
